Centuries ago, the monk seal lived in large colonies on sandbanks and open beaches. However, due to the destruction of this type of habitat and the persecution and disturbance they have suffered, they currently use remote and inaccessible caves throughout their area of distribution, including the Madeira archipelago.

Their original habitat covered the entire Madeira archipelago, including both the main island and the Desertas Islands.
